Lend A Hand Foundation
Program Events and Goals for 2011
The Lend A Hand Foundation (LAHF) is now entering into its 14th year of providing programs and services to youth residing in transitional housing facilities and other youth at a disadvantage. Through all of its programs and services, LAHF instills hope, strength, and confidence in young people to help create a better future for themselves.
Dise/Gardere/Smith Scholarship Fund (June – September): As you know, scholarships are significant in assisting students in need of tuition, room and board, books, food and transportation. When we give a student the opportunity to receive an education, we give them a chance to change the world for the better. This year we wish to increase our support from two to five graduating high school students who are in need.
Education (July 1 – June 30, 2012): We are adding a component (Stay in School) to our educational program of giving out school supplies. We will enroll 10 or more youth into this program the first year to empower them to improve their attendance, participation, and grades through encouragement, support and incentives.
Teen to Adulthood Project (Ongoing): We will continue our monthly life skills workshops in March by providing youth with various topics including financial literacy, health and wellness, education/career planning, leadership training and more. We will continue to provide excursions outside of their normal environment. We have developed a Youth Advisory Board to help us better understand how to serve our youth.
11th Annual Back to School Giveaway (August): This year we will attempt to exceed last year’s school backpack giveaway from 10,000 to 15,000. Approximately 36,000 youth in Oakland Schools are in need of our support. We will do everything in our power to reach as many as possible.
9th Annual Holiday Celebration (December): It is our goal to provide gifts (toys, educational items, clothing, entertainment and refreshments for 1,000 youth and their families this year after last year’s support of over 400. The need has tripled. We will do our best to make this a reality.
